Music News 4.20.17: Record Store Day

Record Store Day is this Saturday, and the list of releases has been out for about a month. Highlights this year include a 7″ of Dolly Parton’s first single “Puppy Love” with its original B-side “Girl Left Alone” ; live shows from the Doors and the Grateful Dead; special editions of the Star Wars Episode IV, the Dark Crystal, and Bladerunner soundtracks; singles and collections from Prince and David Bowie; a live EP from Animal Collective; a live full album from The Flaming Lips; reissues of the Cure’s greatest hits (and its acoustic twin) both featuring double-LP picture discs; and alternate version of Fleetwood Mac’s Mirage, Drive-By Truckers Electric Lady Sessions, a reissue of the Space Jam soundtrack, George Carlin’s famous Grammy-winning comedy album Jammin’ in New York, new singles from the War on Drugs and The The, and a couple hundred more. Austin has 10 record stores participating in this year’s event, many with extra frills to celebrate your shop.

  • Breakaway Records on North Loop will have live DJs, including Third Root’s DJ Chicken George, and some brews from Independence Brewing;
  • Waterloo Records on 6th and Lamar opens at 8AM and will have pastries and coffee in the AM, and Tito’s and Austin Beerworks in the PM, and on Sunday Chris “Whipper” Layton and Tommy Shannon will be there singing the Record Store Day release of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble- Live at Carnegie Hall.
  • Exploded Records on Duval and 45th will have live music and free Yerba Mate shots to keep you energized through your record store crawl
  • Other stores participating are Friends of Sound,, Out of the Past Collectibles, End of an Ear, Groovers Paradise, Antone’s, and Encore Records.
