1st Shortlist Announced for 2016 Mercury Prize
Britain’s Mercury Prize’s 1st shortlist has been announced! The Hyundai Mercury Prize honors the best British album of the past year and is chosen by a selective panel of British music industry heavyweights and music critics. Previous winners of the prestigious award include Portishead, Arctic Monkeys, and PJ Harvey. This year, however, the voting system is different, allowing voter input to name one of the six albums that will make the final shortlist. Included in this year’s consideration is Michael Kinwanuka’s Love & Hate, Savage’s Sophomore album Adore Life, David Bowie’s Blackstar, and Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool. The winner of the 2016 Mercury Prize will be announced September 15th.

Recipients included New Jersey’s Musicians on a Mission (who are holding a Jerry Garcia birthday and benefit show this week), Jerry Day, Fender Music Foundation, and Shimer College. Foundation co-founder and daughter of the late musician, Keelin Garcia, said the foundation is honored “to be able to share my father’s creative spirit with so many charitable organizations that support such worthy causes.”
