Rememebring Joe Ely at KUTX

We were lucky enough to have Joe Ely visit us several times over the years and we’ve compiled all those performances here.

Texas songwriter Joe Ely, whose career took him from the dusty and flat landscape of the Texas Panhandle around the world, collaborating with fellow troubadours Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock in The Flatlanders and rocking out with The Clash, died Monday, December 15,2025 at his home in Taos, New Mexico. The announcement was made on the singer-songwriter’s Facebook page. Ely was 78.

An intimate hour of great music and stories—it’s a special public radio event: Live from Austin, Joe Ely with accordionist Joel Guzman. Recorded January 25, 2008 at the old Austin City Limits Studio 6A. Joe Ely and accordionist Joel Guzman join KUT’s John Aielli for an hour of music and stories.

Joe Ely and The Flatlanders reunited in KUTX Studio 1A on June 24, 2016 to help raise money for the legendary Cactus Cafe at the University of Texas. During the interview they talk to Jody Denberg about future plans and what is like to play with your kids onstage.

Joe Ely joins KUTX in Studio 1A on September 14, 2015 before the release of his album Panhandle Rambler.

Joe Ely performs in KUTX Studio 1A on February 10, 2017 to preview his birthday concert at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, TX.
