It hits synthetically and organically. Enter the shadow world of Public Memory.
Admittedly, Public Memory is rather an enigmatic draw for the AMM, a darkly elegant mixture of raw material and a sophisticated, meticulous construction of beats, samples, electronic nebulousness on the edge of a darkwave universe.
Post-Punk‘s Alice Teeple put it best in a review of 2023’s Elegiac Beat, saying the artist “crafts mesmerizing melodies that echo from the remote recesses of the psychic topography.” It’s the combination of natural and artificial that shifts the soundscape in eerily mesmerizing ways, both in shadow and light, something unfamiliar emerging that may suddenly feel recognizable – then again, it’s not.
Experience the spectral trip-hop invocations of Public Memory (Brooklyn-based artist Robert Toher) when they perform tonight at Chess Club on Red River. Doors at 9 p.m., and the line-up features Dallas-based composer Black Taffy and Austin duo Melody Millage and Carlos Robledo‘s darkwave/synth pop project Thirst For Love.
