Today is the anniversary of the birth of one Hunter S. Thompson, renegade journalist, author and counterculture icon who fearlessly called out the hypocrisy of several aspects of American life, be it government, politics, activism…people being idiots, to summarize. No contemporary journalist or writer has even come close to Thompson’s approach and attitude.
In honor of Thompson’s birthday, there’s a celebratory gathering of bands, DJ’s and like-minded hoodlums happening tonight at Fear & Loathing in Hotel Vegas – at Hotel Vegas, of course, 1500 E. 6th St. And what a party it is, with Austin Music Minute fave Hundred Visions (their song “You’re Gonna Cut Me Loose” from Spite is featured on today’s AMM), Roky Moon, Hollow Trees, Alex Napping and 35mm. You’ll recognize a few familiar faces pulling DJ duties tonight – members of Holy Wave, Christian Bland (The Black Angels), and Erik “Macho” Camacho. Lots of goodies in store for revelers, including a photo booth to capture the madness, fabulous show girls, vintage and vinyl vendors, and – wait for it – free birthday cake. Holy smokes. Live music galore and the gonzo spirit. Doors open at 9 p.m.
“It never got weird enough for me,” Thompson once proclaimed. But hell, we can try. Recommended.
