Listen to any of Emily Wolfe‘s earlier releases, such as Director’s Notes and Mechanical Hands, and you’re presented with a quieter side to her sound, as Wolfe tended to focus on the lyrical power within her music. She’s a wordsmith as she reveals the bits and pieces of a broken heart. But these days, your eardrums are met by mighty mean shreds on Wolfe’s latest blistering single, “Atta Blues,” not so much acoustic as it is electric, and rockin’ as hard as they come. Is this a new era for the melodic soul who knows the strains of heartache? Perhaps Wolfe is wielding the guitar strings more than the heart strings, but that intensity remains as strongly as ever. Just at a higher volume, with a wicked axe.
Wolfe’s release party for “Atta Blues” is tonight at Stubb’s indoor venue, 801 Red River. Doors open at 8 p.m., and Zac Kellog starts out the night at 9 p.m.
There’s more to come from this badass artist. Highly recommended.
