Love Austin Music: Modernform

They were already making music. But a natural shift in instrumentation and vocals gave the band a new life.

Modernform single release show Thursday at The 13th Floor, with Magic Rockers of Texas and Queen Serene.

As with a lot of cool art emerging from messed-up times, a garage rock outfit called HOT///CAKES was born in the midst of pandemic boredom. Following two EPs and playing killer shows with A Giant Dog, Annabelle Chairlegs, TC Superstar and others, the band members switched up instruments to explore other musical avenues and see where inspiration would lead them. With Sofia Sanchez locking in on lead vocals, Modernform morphed into a different entity powered by synth-based pulses and more angular guitar shreds.

Modernform has been in the studio with producer Ernesto Grey (Font, Farmer’s Wife, Loveme) working on their first full-length release, which will be out a little later this year. But this week, they celebrate the release of their new single “French 75” with a show tomorrow night, Friday Jan. 17, at The 13th Floor on Red River. They’re joined by Magic Rockers of Texas and Queen Serene on the bill. Doors at 8 p.m.
