A select few of us music fans got a special preview of some new material by Joanna Barbera a few months ago, via cassette tape. Granted, your humble Austin Music Minute maven was a bit stumped due to a lack of accessible cassette players in my immediate vicinity, but it didn’t matter. I was privy to the fact that the Austin-based songwriter had some fantastic stuff on the way.
Scheduled for release in August, the gripping and evocative Forget is about leaving the past behind, and the freedom that comes after letting go. And, while Barbera’s music is based in solid folk roots, this time she moves further into denser instrumentation that gives her style more of a rock sound.
Joanna Barbera is having her album release party Thursday night at Holy Mountain, 617 E. 7th St., sharing the bill with two other local greats: The Couch and Bells & Parks. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.
