Your humble Austin Music Minute maven would like to take a moment to give proper credit where credit is due. My esteemed Austin Music Map colleague Haley Howle introduced me to the music of Growl, thanks in part to the upcoming MAP JAM 2014. Growl is one of the featured artists performing at the daylong musical event, during which you can see local bands play at different locations throughout East Austin.
The local quartet, fresh off of “a brief tour of the Bible belt” (they couldn’t resist a grin after admitting that), recently gave a performance in Studio 1A to share tracks off of their new EP No Years, which they spent six months on perfecting and getting just the way they wanted it. And it does not disappoint – solid indie/pop/power/garage-y rock reminiscent of bands like Superchunk, Pavement and early-’90s short-lived English group Field Mice.
Growl is celebrating the release of No Years with a release party tonight at Holy Mountain, 617 E. 7th St. It’s an excellent all-local band bill starring The Laughing, Milezo and Young Mammals. Doors open at 9 p.m. Very recommended.
