Pendulum

Here’s to dancing in the darkness. Twin Tribes’ latest swings deeper into electro-darkwave synth.

AMM April 17 2024

Twin Tribes play tonight at Mohawk, with Urban Heat and Bootblacks.

It’s hard to believe it’s been nine years since Luis Navarro and Joel Niño Jr. made their debut as Twin Tribes. The Brownsville natives have one hell of a touring schedule, a nonstop whirlwind leaving some fans surprised to learn they’re originally from Texas. But are they ever home? Perhaps home would be the haunted aesthetic of their soundscape.

This year’s tour roster is heavier than ever, thanks to the darkwave treasure Pendulum, and its lead single “Monolith” sending the most brooding hearts aflutter. Of course, not a single Twin Tribes album is without its danceable elements, from gothic supreme debut Shadows to the delectably gloomy melodies on Ceremony. Pendulum also swings and sways in its own shadowy goth grooves, yet Navarro and Niño delve even further into a synth-based sound.

Consider yourself warned. There’s a low ticket alert for tonight’s Twin Tribes show at Mohawk, on the outdoor stage. And they’ve brought their Austin tour mates Urban Heat back with them for the big night that includes a set by Brooklyn-based post-punks Bootblacks. Excellent, one and all. Doors at 6:30 p.m. Dress code? All black everything.
