So There

Ben Folds‘ forthcoming album, So There, is set for a September release, but the songwriter is already beyond excited about sharing it. Recorded in less than two weeks at Folds’ studio in Nashville, the album moves in a direction he hadn’t thoroughly explored yet – perhaps in some of his arrangements. But this time, it’s slightly more orchestral in many ways with its chamber instrumentation, such as strings, flutes and horns. However, So There is not classical. It’s very much the perfect pop Folds is known for, made all the richer by his collaboration with NYC-based instrumental ensemble yMusic. And even if it is on a slightly different path, stylistically, there are always the lyrics. Folds pulls no punches. If ever there was someone who could write about love without sugarcoating it, Folds does it well in his self-deprecating, sardonic way.

You have the opportunity to see Ben Folds tonight at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater, 801 Red River. Doors open at 7 p.m. Songwriter Lucas Jack plays Stubb’s indoor venue following the show. Check it out.
