Salihah Saadiq hosts a month-long series celebrating the sounds that make the world go round.
Salihah Saadiq organized a June music series at Antone’s to not only elevate all the outstanding talent on each bill, but also to impart the wisdom of the ages. The music of the forebears is at the root of everything we listen to now. “This revolution MUST be televised,” Saadiq paraphrased Gil Scott-Heron‘s 1971 poem of resistance, following it with the heartfelt declaration, “…and may we continue to be louder than ever.”
Songs In the Key of Us: A Black Music Month Concert Series at Antone’s features touring and local artists in a well-curated homage to the phenomenal musical talent that paved the way, and today’s ever-evolving artistry inspired by it all. Saadiq, a freelance photographer with an exceptional eye for portraiture, and a music lover with superb taste, pulled together some irresistible line-ups for the month-long celebration.
Tomorrow night‘s Songs in The Key of Rock kick-off show shines the spotlight on ESG, an OG South Bronx band that influenced a wide range of genres, from hip-hop to dance-punk, featuring the Scroggins sisters, Renee, Valerie, Deborah and Marie. Austin-based electronic/pop/rock artist Pearl Z is the opener, and DJ Wyldflower keeps the party moving. Doors at 8 p.m.
Next weekend, Songs In the Key of Funk takes over the Antone’s room with a big birthday bash for The Meters‘ founding member and guitarist Leo Nocentelli. Austin artists THEBROSFRESH and Alesia Lani make it the perfect mix, Saturday June 15. Doors at 8 p.m.
