Tkay Maidza takes no prisoners. Her second LP is about taking no crap.
There’s a track on the first EP of the Last Year Was Weird triology by Tkay Maidza, “Growing Up,” that points in the direction of the future. Yes, the growing-old part sucks, but here’s a badass in the making. Maidza understands there’s no turning back: “Lost a couple friends, yeah, time showed me / Every vision different, like a mind on speed / Lost inside the music, so I mute, stay away / Or I’ma lose it.”
And it was only the beginning, as the Australian artist turned round to unleash Vol. 2, leaving every fool “Shook” and reminding them they weren’t getting anywhere via the sweetly crooned “You Sad,” as if shaking her head like, “Nah.” By the time Vol. 3 hit, Maidza was feeling the freedom of genre-hopping with extra fervor. “Syrup” too thicc for you? Too bad. Next!
Sweet Justice continues the skyrocket trajectory – bold, beat-heavy, and smoothly switching gears like a hot pro. “Out Of Luck,” doubling down on the badassery alongside Lolo Zouaï and Amber Mark, is kicking losers with excuses to the curb. Meanwhile, the absolute banger “WUACV” moves slow and low as an amped-up metaphorical Terminator makes it known what happens when pushed to the edge. “I’m 5150, I run through your city, I’m strapped with machetes / Believe me, I’m petty, I’m rocky, I’m ready / Straight to the dome got you dreaming, I’m Freddy / You shouldn’t upset me.” It’s time to cut through the B.S.
Sweet, sweet justice. Tkay Maidza continues her Sweet Justice tour with a stop in the ATX to perform tonight, Saturday March 2, at Antone’s. Doors at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m.
