It’s no secret; your humble Austin Music Minute hostess with the mostess is a geek-out fan of the mighty Thao and The Get Down Stay Down. You heard the raves on today’s AMM for A Man Alive: Mad beats and bass are the solidifying elements, taking a lot of hip-hop influences to another level, all manner of funky grooves, crunchy riffs and – mark and remember – soul overflow. To the hilt. Vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, all-round phenom front woman Thao Nguyen and her band have assembled their best LP to date.
As well you know, any songwriter of Nguyen’s caliber brings so much more to the music on an emotional level. Nguyen is known for her personal writing, but A Man Alive confronts lingering uncertainty, pain and messy inner turmoil face to face. Eternal questions are asked. Are there answers yet?
Get out to the Mohawk tonight for Thao and The Get Down Stay Down. They perform on the outside stage. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the evening starts out with a set by Shreveport powerhouse rockers Seratones.
Very recommended. Tell Thao I said hello, please.
