Alex Marrero

My KUTX // July 20, 2024

Our new Horizontes host, Alex Marrero, grew up the son of Cuban parents in Mexico City, so he was exposed to a fuller picture of Latin American culture from an early age. Cuban jazz filled his house, and later he fell in love with Mexico’s vibrant rock en español scene (Cafe Tacvba came from the same part of Mexico City he grew up in). Brazilian friends and Argentinian records introduced him to South America’s diverse music.

This is all to say: Marrero knows his stuff. But he’s not just a music fan, collector, and DJ, he’s also a musician. He brought the hammer as the singer for Brownout’s Brown Sabbath project, earning praise from Ozzy himself. He’s continued singing in Brownout since then, as well as playing drums in the Austin surf-rock outfit the Avocados.

You can hear Marrero thread all these influences every Sunday night, 7-9 p.m., on Horizontes, but this week on My KUTX, he’s taking a deeper dive into his own history. His guest DJ set traces his roots from Mexico to the DJ seat, with many fascinating detours along the way. Hear My KUTX on Saturday, July 20 at 6 p.m. or listen anytime right here.
