Like a lot of classic country music, Jomo & The Possum Posse’s “Driving Down From Detroit” could basically be a stand-up comedy routine. The hapless protagonist is too engrossed in his John Grisham audio book to notice he missed his flight home. He doesn’t realize Detroit is in the Eastern Time Zone. And driving back, he declares that Pittsburgh and hell are one in the same.
This song, with its funky mix and hilarious storytelling, is one of the highlights on Jomo & The Possum Posse’s new album, Yesterday’s Coffee. It makes sense it was produced by Kevin Russell of Shinyribs, a fellow Austinite who shares a love of funky humor. The Posse is led by the ace songwriting of Jomo Edwards, who also accidentally created a viral video almost fifteen years ago with “Guy On A Buffalo.” It featured Jomo’s music narrating the public domain exploits of a guy, indeed, riding a buffalo.
This week on My KUTX, we’re exciting to turn the guest DJ seats over to Jomo and Jes Clifford from the Possum Posse. They show how musicians like Hank Williams and Terry Allen also mixed humor and country, sing the praises of up-and-comers like Sierra Ferrell, and play the funkiest song John Prine ever made. Hear Jomo & The Possum Posse’s My KUTX on Saturday, September 14 at 6 p.m or listen anytime right here.
