The Austin City Limits Music Festival is back–and this year, it’s bigger than ever. Shinyribs is Kevin Russell, also known as the frontman for the Gourds. His irreverent take on American roots music has gained him a cult following the world over. This year’s Gulf Coast Museum finds him melding folk, country, soul, and Cajun into an irresistible mixture.
Keegan DeWitt pulls double-duty as a film-music composer and, along with co-founder Jeremy Bullock, leads Nashville’s Wild Cub. The self-released their debut Youth earlier this year, but it’s getting a big re-release this January via Mom + Pop Records.
The Los Angeles roots of Dawes show on their third album, this year’s well-received Stories Don’t End. With golden harmonies and melodies that recall Jackson Browne and CSN&Y, the group stopped by KUTX’s backstage tent to chat about the festival and play a stripped-down version of album-standout “Someone Will.”
