American-Venezuelan singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart meditates on love, parenthood, and loss on his tenth album in nearly twenty years, Ma. As the folk savant is approaching 40, he is dealing with deaths of parents and mentors, while realizing he may never become a father. He reflects on this existential crisis in his latest by sharing the wisdom he would pass on to his hypothetical child, advice he wishes he had learned in his adolescence. Imbued with his seamless shifts from funk to piano balladry and delicate finger picking, Banhart makes every second full of rich takeaways for the listener, even as his deep lyricism roams between English, Portugese, Japanese, and Spanish.

We had the pleasure of having Devendra Banhart perform for our Concert Club with a live “This Song” podcast taping with Elizabeth McQueen while he was here for Levitation Festival.
