Gregg Rolie at KUTX 1.16.13

Keyboardist and singer Gregg Rolie casts a pretty long shadow. He’s a founding member of not just one, but two of the most influential groups of the late 60s and 70s: Santana and Journey. He sang lead vocals on two of Santana’s biggest hits “Black Magic Woman” and “Evil Ways,” and his Hammond B3 sound is almost as recognizable as Carlos Santana’s guitar on the band’s early material. He performed with the band at their landmark show at Woodstock. In 1973, Rolie joined forces with Santana ex-guitarist Neal Schon, and they formed a little band called Journey. He played keys and shared vocal duties with Schon until the arrival of Steve Perry in 1977. Rolie left Journey in 1980 to embark on a solo career. Rolie’s reunited with some of his Santana and Journey peers over the years, including stints performing with Steve Smith and Ross Valory from Journey as The Storm, and in the late 90s with Schon and some ex-Santana band members as Abraxas Pool. In 2001 he returned to solo work when he formed The Gregg Rolie band. Take a listen to Gregg Rolie and crew in KUTX Studio 1a. RIGHT HERE!
