“In order to change, you’ve got to make so many mistakes,” Melina Duterte, better known as Jay Som, mentions when reflecting on her recent growth as an artist. After her 2017 debut of Everybody Works, Duterte suddenly felt the instability of musicianhood as she found herself sharing stages with Paramore, Death Cab for Cutie, and Mitski. To regain a sense of clarity, she imposed a solo week-long retreat to Joshua Tree, where her latest album Anak Ko was born. The Filipino phrase for “my child”, Anak Ko explores the importance of patience and kindness, evoking the security she feels when her mother addresses her as such.
We caught up with the dream pop savant and her band ahead of their show at Barracuda to chat with KUTX host Jody Denberg. Listen to the live performance below!
