Lee Fields is the knight-errant of R&B royalty, touring for almost half a century and still going strong. Fields and his adventuring party, The Expressions, don’t spend their time fighting dragons–they fight loneliness. The title track of his latest album, Special Night, ends with a sultry spoken interlude by Fields where he cautions that “loneliness can be dangerous.” Fields’ music is his Excalibur: a sound that has been passed down through the ages but can still cut through steel. The sixth track, “Make the World” is an energetic soul stomper with sharp horns that feel at home both in 1970 and 2017. Fields, the romantic that he is, reveals his outlook on life: “I know you got my back, you know I got your back too.” Special Night is a personal and honest work with a sound that many people emulate but only a master can achieve.
