A dedicated student of hip hop music and culture, Norman Ba$e has called Austin home for the better part of twenty years and in that time has solidified his position in the city’s growing hip hop scene. Ba$e and band stopped by Studio 1A to perform a few songs off of his upcoming album, Pigeon Park!

Is your name really Norman? Tell us about the Norman BA$E name.
Norman Ba$e is a play on Norman Bates
Where are you originally from?
Brooklyn, NY
What brought you to Austin and when?
Moved to Austin in 2005…I wanted to escape my environment.
Tell us about how you got into music.
My mom and older family members. I grew up watching my mom’s old VCR tapes of yo mtv raps… my uncle was in a band and my big cousin is a DJ. I also played saxophone as a kid so music in general pretty much runs in my family.
Any early musical inspirations that have stuck with you?
No early inspirations I just love hip-hop. I love it I talk it I walk it I dress it…it’s my culture so I appreciate it

Tell us a favorite Austin Music Experience.
My favorite Austin music experience is just getting to perform in general. I love this city and all it does for artists. I just hope they give more black hiphop artist a spotlight because it’s a bunch of talented artist born and raised from here and also transplants like me.
You’re playing Summer Jam during Hot Summer Nights. How do you stay cool during these hot summer nights? And/Or give us a tip on how to stay cool on these hot summer nights.
Well it’s going to be hot we in Texas. I’ll say key thing is to stay hydrated
What do you have coming up in the remaining 2024? (tell us about any releases, tours or special shows to be on the lookout for)
I’m dropping a tape Pigeon Park this fall as far as show we just grinding check out Instagram shows in profile.
