Where did you get that super fresh name?
I got the name Shxwnfresh from a really creative time in my life when I was part of a collective group of artists, writers, producers, and vocalists. We were all about bringing fresh vibes to everything we did—whether it was our music, our style, or our approach to life. It was this collective energy that made “fresh” a natural part of our identity. Shxwnfresh just felt like a perfect reflection of that spirit. It’s not just a name; it’s a reminder of those collaborative days and the constant push to keep things innovative and authentic.
Where are you originally from?
I’m originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. That’s where my journey began and where I first developed my love for music. The vibrant culture and rich musical history of Baton Rouge have had a big influence on my sound and style.
When did you move to Austin and what brought you here?
I moved to Austin almost three years ago, drawn by the city’s beautiful opportunities and its welcoming, homey vibe. Austin’s vibrant music scene and the way it embraces creativity really resonated with me. It felt like the perfect place to grow as an artist and be surrounded by a community that shares a deep love for music. The energy here has been incredibly inspiring and has helped me evolve both personally and professionally.
How did you get into creating and performing music?
I’ve always had a musical background because my grandfather was a pastor, and growing up, I was immersed in music from a young age. This early exposure helped me develop a keen ear for good sound and live instrumentation. Additionally, I was really into poetry as a kid, which naturally evolved into creating music. My passion for writing and expressing myself through words seamlessly transitioned into songwriting and performing. It’s been a journey from poetry to music, and each step has enriched my craft and performance.
Any early musical inspirations that have stuck with you?
Another big inspiration for me came from watching my older cousins. They’d perform at small events with their friends, and seeing the way their music connected with people and lit up the room was something else. The reactions from family and friends, and the way their music made people feel, really stuck with me. It showed me firsthand how powerful music can be and sparked my own drive to get into creating and performing.
Who are some Austin artists that should be on everyone’s radar?
I’d like to give a shout-out to some incredible Austin artists. Shvkiel, a fantastic R&B artist from New Orleans, is definitely worth checking out. Also, THEBROSFRESH and Letrainiump, who all hail from Louisiana, are making significant contributions to the Austin music scene. Not only do they bring fresh sounds and unique styles, but they’re also giving back to the community in meaningful ways. Their efforts enrich the city and help support the local music culture.
What’s your favorite Austin Music Experience?
It’s tough to pick just one favorite because I’ve had so many awesome music experiences in Austin. I love every show and event I’m part of, but what really stands out is connecting with the crowd. Seeing people genuinely get into the music and vibe with it is the best feeling. It’s those moments that make the Austin music scene so electric and unforgettable.
What’s next?
I’ve got some exciting things coming up for the rest of 2024. I’m working on a studio EP that will feature my summer hit “Magnolia” with Sweetlimb. I’m also looking forward to my show at Stubbs on August 30th. It’s a dope venue, and having a gig there is a significant milestone for me as an artist. I’m really grateful for the chance and excited for what’s ahead.
