Let’s Meet: The Point

Austin natives The Point released their sophomore album, Maldito Animal, this past May

Joe Roddy and Jack Montesinos first started this project together in high school. Technically that was only a few years ago but the two have been playing in the Austin music scene much much longer. The Austin Chronicle called them “Homegrown prodigy rockers”. At the age of 12, Roddy first took the stage playing trumpet. Montesinos began even earlier, when his father, Ted Roddy, would take him to play at the Historic Victory Grill’s Monday blues nights at just 10 years old.

The Point released their sophomore album Maldito Animal this past May with production from Beto Martinez of Grupo Fantasma, Caramelo Haze and Brownout. The band plays Saturday, August 24th during Meadowfest at The Far Out Lounge.

FOLLOW THE POINT

Tell us how y’all picked The Point for the band name?

We named it after the Harry Nilsson soundtrack for a cartoon of the same name. It’s an inside joke.

When did you two meet and start making music together?

We met in jazz band class in 6th grade (Lamar Middle School) in Austin.

When was the first time you performed in front of an audience?

(Jack) First time was with a blues band at Jax on 29th St. I was 10 yrs old.

Joe played for the first time with his dad Ted Roddy [as a kid].

Any early musical inspirations that have stuck with you?

We both bonded over our love for Jimmy Smith (jazz organist) and the blues. Mainly Texas blues like Freddie King, Lightnin Hopkins, as well as 90s hip hop.

Who are some Austin artists that should be on people’s radar?

Hotel De Nova, Atlas Maior, Nossas Novas, Cazayoux, Viva Palestina Orchestra

Tell us a favorite Austin Music Experience.

Our favorite Austin music experience has been learning from the older generation of musicians and club owners in town. They’ve accepted us because we’ve been trusted to keep the Austin music tradition alive. We’re from here, and we respect and have a deep understanding of what came before.

What do you have planned for the rest of the year or next year?
We have a new record coming out next year in the spring, as well as a European tour shortly after in 2025.
