When someone thinks of music from North Carolina, they might imagine Appalachian Americana or country. Rainbow Kitten Surprise, the 5-piece band that hails from the college town of Boone, is changing this perception. Their name is outlandish, and so is their music (in the best way possible). By fusing together a spectrum of sounds and influence, RKS create music like no other. On their latest album, How to: Friend, Love, Freefall, RKS dive deep into themes identity, love, family, and life. On songs like “Hide,” lead singer Sam Melo sings about sexuality and coming out, and songs like “Fever Pitch” are a testament to his vocal range and ability. RKS are genre-benders of the first degree. Their sound has elements of folk, indie, rock, R &B, and rap among so many other influences. Rainbow Kitten Surprise is playing a sold-out show at Stubb’s Amphitheater tonight, but you can get a taste of them by listening to their Studio 1A session below.
