Sharon Van Etten has found a melodious middle ground between indie, folk, and rock. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter uses vocal harmonies more often than some of her folk rock contemporaries and in a much different way. Van Etten composes in terms of layered melodies rather than a harmonies on top of a melody, multi-tracking her voice for studio recordings while working with a backup singer for live performances.
Van Etten has released four albums since 2009, with her latest Are We There debuting at #25 on the Billboard Top 200 earlier this year. The stylistic diversity of Are We There illustrates Van Etten’s growth and maturity as a songwriter through eleven ornate arrangements that balance heart-wrenching lyrics with commanding vocal and instrumental performances.
