Son Rompe Pera in Studio 1A 5.9.25

Patricia Lim

Son Rompe Pera performed songs from their 2023 album Chimborazo

In an interview, Son Rompe Pera’s Kacho Gama said his band “is in the middle of everything. We’re a rock mestizo band that plays cumbia.” And the glue holding all those disparate cultural and musical elements together? The marimba. For brothers Kacho, Mongo, and Kilos Gama, the marimba ties their past performing traditional songs on the streets of Mexico City to their present, turning out their in-your-face brand of rockabilly-tinged cumbia. The band premiered songs from their latest album, Chimborazo, for KUTX during our live broadcasts from Scholz Garten in 2023, and a few lucky listeners got a reprise performance when the band returned to Austin as part of an epic tour taking them through the Southwest and West Coast!
