You may know Will Johnson as the founding member of Centro-matic, but the singer-songwriter has made his own musical niche from his collaborations with Jim James, Conner Oberst, Jay Farrar, and more. The musician and painter has a busy mind with the various projects he always has in the works, and his restless Texas warmth shines in his sixth solo album, Wire Mountain. His first album with the carefully-curated Austin label Keeled Scales is what KUTX producer Art Levy calls, “subtle and sparse, fixated on the friction between quiet folk and noisy, fuzzed-out guitar jams.” This sparseness, coupled with Johnson’s intimate lyricism, results in a record that proves the Missouri native’s soulful style will be the key to his continued success in the years to come.
This KUTX fave stopped by Studio 1A to play some songs off of his latest record for Jay Trachtenberg before his show at The Cactus Cafe on December 7th! Can’t make it to the show? We have you covered with Johnson’s live performance and interview below!
