This week, the Song of the Day features SXSW 2016 artists. Catch up on last week’s picks here.
Little Scream’s 2011 debut, The Golden Record, had the sound of an artist trying on different hats. There were hushed folk songs and propulsive rock songs in equal measure, all held together by Laurel Sprengelmeyer’s chameleon-like voice.
With her new single out via Merge, the Montreal singer now adds funk to her skill set. “Love As A Weapon” is a tightly-coiled dance song with a dozen brilliant details: Sprengelmeyer’s falsetto choir; bubbling synths; that nimble bass/organ that follows her every vocal pirouette like a partner on the dance floor. The sentiment matches the sound note-for-note, creating a kiss-off that still struts its stuff. Listen to the song below.
