It’s the first Tuesday post-SXSW, and there’s probably more than a few of you out there still recovering. We here at KUTX had an awesome SXSW, and all this week we’re bringing you some of our favorite performances from SXSW 2013. One of them was Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside, who performed in the wee hours of the morning Wednesday at KUTX’s showcase at the Four Seasons.
The band plays a stomping brand of old time, rootsy rock ‘n’ roll. It’s twangy, and singer/guitarist Sallie Ford has a voice that’s plenty sassy. She grew up in North Carolina before pulling up stakes and heading to Portland, Ore. In 2007 she teamed up with upright bassist Tyler Tornfelt, drummer Ford Tennis, and lead guitarist Jeffrey Munger. They released their first EP Not an Animal in 2009, and it found its way to Seth Avett. He liked what he heard and invited Ford and the Sound Outside to support his band The Avett Brothers on a West Coast tour. Their first LP Dirty Radio hit the streets in 2011 via Partisan records, and they just released their sophomore record Untamed Beast last month.
During their Four Seasons set, they performed a few tunes off the new record, including today’s song of the day “Party Kids.” The song begins with a pounding beat and a guitar so twangy it’d make Eddie Cochran blush. There’s some shades of The Pretenders on this tune, especially in Ford’s confident, brassy vocals. You couldn’t ask for a better wake-up call than Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside.
