Juan Gabriel “the Divo of Juarez” Dies at 66

Latin music superstar Juan Gabriel, the “divo of Juarez” passed away over the weekend for reasons currently unknown. Throughout his career, it I estimated that Juan Gabriel released around 1,800 songs, both in the pop and rock genres. Juan Gabriel was known for his marathon live performances and was, in fact, in the middle of a tour in support of his album of duets he released earlier this year. In response to the singer’s untimely death, Mexican President Enrique Pena tweeted his condolences, calling him one of the country’s “greatest musical icons.” Juan Gabriel was 66. (NPR)

Swedish Producer Avicii Retires from Touring, Plays Final Show in Spain

Swedish house producer (and let’s not lie, electronic music superstar) Tim Bergling, better known by his stage name Avicii, played his final live show last night. Though the electronic musician announced his retirement from touring months ago, fans have felt the news like a fresh wound ever since. This seems less weird when you consider that Avicii’s career and fan base in Sweden and parts of Europe have been compared to Beyonce and America. The 26-year-old musician says his decision is primarily based on the toll that 5 years of nearly constant touring has taken on his health, reporting that the DJ has played about 220 sets in the last 261 weeks, and that’s in addition to putting out new music and collaborating with other musicians. Avicii played his final show at Ushuaia Ibiza, finishing out a five-year residency at the club. (Stereogum)
