Bay Area artist Chrystia Cabral crafts experimental pop under the moniker SPELLING. And on her fourth full-length release Portrait of My Heart, Cabral takes on a torrent of emotion shifting between love and alienation, equal parts romantic and tormented, amidst layers of pop-punk, funk rock, nu-metal maneuvers and gothic majesty. The opening title track reverberates with anxious forthrightness: “Shadow in the dark / Stranger in my head / Portrait of my heart / I don’t belong here…”
SPELLING’s tour includes a show in Austin tonight at The Parish, 501 Brushy St. Chicago-based melancholic pop masters smut open the show. Doors at 7:30 p.m.
