There is a quote from the Charlie Chaplin film, Limelight (1952), that feels most appropriate to apply to a talent such as Christopher Denny. Chaplin, portraying an aging actor near the end of his life, says in a heart-achingly forlorn tone, “The heart and the mind. What an enigma!”
That is a perfect summary of Denny’s complexity. The songwriter and Little Rock native unleashes thoughts and ideas from an old soul within, eternally curious about life but not exactly content with it at the moment. As a result, his music feels like an ongoing adventure facing a multitude of demons, with plenty of pit stops and pitfalls along the way.
Denny currently has a residency going on at The North Door, at E. 5th and Brushy, which is where you can see him play tonight. It’s a wonderful bill that includes performances by Meggan Carney and Jazz Mills. (Elizabeth McQueen, originally scheduled to be on the bill tonight, will not be performing due to a prior engagement with Asleep At the Wheel.)
