Being able to float seamlessly between styles isn’t just a matter of taste; you gotta earn it by putting your personal 10,000 hours in. At least. And a perfect example of that from the percussion world is Josh Halpern. The native Austinite started off in high school as one half of what would soon become local superstars Marmalakes. But in the past decade and a half he’s expanded his repertoire and manned the kit behind acts like Bayonne, Still Corners, Hello Wheels, Bayonne, daphne tunes, Rob Leines, Waldo Witt, Voxtrot, Loma, and more, not to mention his pandemic-born eponymous solo project J Halp.
After yet another year splitting up his time on the road and in the studio, Josh dropped by KUTX to recap what he’s been up to lately, what all he’s got in store for 2026, and a few of his all-time favorites.
