Chicago is the birthplace of house music, an electronic music subgenre that’s earned a worldwide fanbase for its emphasis on endless dancing, inclusivity, and PLUR: peace, love, unity, and respect. DJ Shani first fell in love with house in her native Chicago, starting a radio show focused on the sound two decades ago. She’s become something of a house music ambassador, first in London and now in Austin. This week on My KUTX, she returns as our guest DJ, offering up a detailed crash course in house music’s roots, its modern Austin connections, and its ability to get people through tough times.
