Hunt Sales is the force behind that beat. Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life” sounds like Bo Diddley on rocket fuel thanks to Sales’ incredible drumming, which manages to be exhilarating, life-affirming, and terrifying all at once. It is one of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time, performed in part by a guy who knows a lot about rock and roll.

Sales was born into a show business family. His father, Soupy Sales, was one of the preeminent television hosts and comedians of his time. Hunt Sales has played with Todd Rundgren and Bootsy Collins, and he and his brother Tony made a formidable rhythm section, first for Iggy and later for David Bowie and his ’80s band Tin Machine. Since settling in Austin in 2000, Sales has been a fixture as a session player and bandleader. Earlier this year, he released Get Your Shit Together, an album recorded with his band Hunt Sales Memorial, and it features his pummeling drumming and soul-baring voice in equal measure.

This week on My KUTX, Hunt Sales is our guest DJ, running down the songs and people who have made an impact on his life. He’s seen and heard a lot, and you can hear My KUTX on Saturday, July 13 or at any time in the player below.
