Music figures heavily in a lot of the films by the Austin-based director Michael Tully. There’s his documentary Silver Jew, a moving chronicle of the Silver Jews’ David Berman and his first tour of Israel. Ping Pong Summer features tons of classic hip-hop that Tully grew up with in the ’80s. And his latest film, Don’t Leave Home, arguably wouldn’t be as creepy without Michael Montes’ atmospheric and foreboding score.

Don’t Leave Home opens at the Austin Film Society on September 14 and 15, featuring a Q +A with Tully and actress Anna Margaret Hollyman at both screenings. This week on My KUTX, Tully is also our guest DJ, pulling together an hour of ’80s hip-hop, underground psychedelia, and modern riff rock with cinematic skill. Hear Michael Tully’s My KUTX on Saturday, September 8, 6 to 7 p.m., or listen anytime at the bottom of the page.
