Jungle – “Us Against the World”

Maile Carballo / KUTX

Each week during Left of the Dial, KUTX Music Director, Rick McNulty shares the best song he heard this week.

“It’s probably medically dangerous to dance in this heat,” is what the “smart” part of my brain would say if wasn’t vaporized some time in late July. Good riddance, it feels better to revel in the heat-induced delirium.

Volcano would be a good subtitle for the summer of 2023, but it’s also Jungle’s latest and best record. The London duo’s fourth LP leans deep into their late 70s soul, disco, and funk foundation, and produced a dozen tracks that will make your body move like it’s essential for survival. Even better, for us nocturnal Texans, the sound is perfect for sweaty wee-hour disco ball-lit dance floors—likely a consequence of their work with Inflo, the recently revealed mastermind behind SAULT.

“Jungle has released a summer banger just in the nick of time. “Us Against the World” seems like the anthem we need now to fight this natural disaster of a summer we’re experiencing in ’23.”
