The song of the summer just might be one that’s almost four decades old. After its placement in the latest season of the Netflix series Stranger Things, Kate Bush’s 1985 jam “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” topped the charts in the U.K. and earned the artist her first U.S. top 10 single in June. She’s long been an influence for musicians of all different genres, but it’s exciting to see younger generations discover Bush’s mystical pop music for themselves.
It’s also perfect timing for the Kate Bush Bash, an event organized on Bush’s birthday by Austin musicians Anastasia Wright (Hong Kong Wigs) and Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog, Sweet Spirit). Presented by KUTX at 3TEN at ACL Live on July 30, the Bash celebrates Bush’s music with live renditions by a diverse roundup of Austin musicians: Kalu James (Kalu & the Electric Joint), Carrie Fussell (Calliope Musicals), Jonathan Horstmann (Urban Heat), Nnedi Agbaroji (Trouble In The Streets, Golden Dawn Arkestra), and more. The event benefits Free Lunch ATX, a musician-led organization that grows, cooks, and serves food for those experiencing homelessness in our community.
This week on My KUTX, Anastasia and Sabrina preview the Bash with an hour of their favorite Kate Bush classics, plus music from some of the Austin musicians taking part in the event. Hear My KUTX on Saturday, July 23 at 6 p.m. or listen any time in the player above.
