Spanish Gold @ KUTX 6.19.14

Spanish Gold is comprised of guitarist Adrian Quesada, formerly of Groupo Fantasma, lead vocalist Dante Schwebel of Hacienda, and drummer Patrick Hallahan from My Morning Jacket. Quesada and Schwebel went to high school together in Laredo, while Hallahan and Schwebel toured the world together, backing up Dan Auerbach on his “Keep It Hid” tour. While working on what was supposed to be Schwebel’s solo project the group quickly struck a common chord with their love for hip-hop, funk and MTV. As a result, their debut album South of Nowhere serves up a generous helping from a melting pot of influences. Growing up in the golden age of the MTV era, when the channel was solely based on music videos, Hallahan believes “The way that the programming crossed genres from R&B to hip-hop, rock, soul and pop music is how we approach records. It’s an album of all those styles.” The organic trio brings upbeat, rhythmic drums and twangy guitars on “Ride on Up” and “Out on the Street,” but “Shangri La” and title track “South of Nowhere” expand on a darker sound with seductive keys and chords. Catch the trio on their North American tour, stopping at The Parish June 19. Check out their live session here in Studio 1A right here.
