My KUTX: DAIISTAR

DAIISTAR

My KUTX // March 9, 2024

Psychedelic rock is a torch that’s passed among generations, and DAIISTAR is the latest to take it up. In a nice generational hand off, the Austin band’s debut album, Good Time, was produced by the Black Angels’ Alex Maas and engineered by James Petralli of White Denim. Good Time takes its inspiration from the ’80s and ’90s psychedelic moment when fuzzed-out guitars and dance floor beats started joining forces. I hear a lot of Spacemen 3 in the band’s droning pop, and DAIISTAR has already earned touring partners in psych rock elders the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Last fall, the band took the stage at Levitation, and next week, they’ll bring their sound to SXSW before undertaking their first UK/EU tour this spring.

This week on My KUTX, we’re rebroadcasting DAIISTAR’s guest DJ set from 2023. Bassist Misti Hamrick and synth player Derek Strahan are the guest DJs, and their set is full of DAIISTAR’s inspirations, meant to be played at a maximum volume for the full psych-rock experience. Hear DAIISTAR’s My KUTX on Saturday, March 9 at 6 p.m., or listen anytime right here.
