2021 felt like a weird holding pattern. Live music started up only to slow down due to coronavirus variants. Everything felt uneasy, but also a little hopeful that we can start building some new Austin music memories. Likewise, the year’s My KUTX episodes are split in half between recorded-from-home DJ sets and a return to sets recorded at KUTX.
I’m definitely thankful for those in-person sets. Nothing beats the give-and-take of a live guest DJ experience, where the musician is feeding off the music, I’m feeding off the musician’s energy, and we create something together. A playlist becomes a living, breathing thing, and we all get to share in it.
This year’s My KUTX slate spanned a wide range of people and sounds: Austin jazz musicians, bestselling authors, English art-rockers, Colombian electro producers, and yet another band featuring Austin guitarist and MVP Beto Martinez. For New Year’s Day, we’re once again turning the keys over to some of these musicians and music fans for a My KUTX marathon. Each hour, a different guest DJ will spin a hand-picked set of their favorite songs. See the schedule below and thank you for listening.
